John was born in New York City, grew up in Purcellville, Virginia, near the Blue Ridge Mountains, and came to San Francisco to live in 1980. In 1988 he graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute with a BFA in photography.
He was best known for landscape photography and was just beginning to gain some recognition when he became ill with AIDS in August of 1989. John loved the outdoors and had a very special eye for beauty in nature, which was reflected in his photography.
John’s smile and humor brought joy to all who knew him. For the many who loved him, he will always live in our memories.
